Troy Hawks, marketing director at Sunlight Mountain Resort, approached Chris Tribble of the True Media Foundation in the fall of 2016. Troy wanted to create a film festival that did two things:

1.) Got people "stoked" for the upcoming ski season in a more localized way. Rather than just pushing play on the latest corporate ski movie, Winter Stoke features short videos produced by you, Roaring Fork locals thriving in your element: winter.

2.) Winter Stoke also seeks to get local youth involved and inspire them to pick their cameras, phones, and drones, get outside, and share their winter adventures through video production. Given True Media Foundation's mission in mentoring local youth to create new media with positive social impact, the stoke was lit. Winter Stoke Film Festival is a fundraiser for the True Media Foundation.

In its inaugural year, Winter Stoke Film Festival featured sold-out events in Glenwood Springs and Carbondale. Seven locally-produced films were featured in front of more than 400 attendees and event organizers knew the stoke was alive and the move was made to make Winter Stoke an annual event.
